MY PRACTICE

In addition to the excellent comprehensive basic and advanced training through The Rolf Institute, my work is greatly influenced by several other factors. My own personal experience with injury and pain from athletic over-indulgence including numerous orthopedic surgeries has given me an empathetic understanding of the complexities of treatment and healing, either to prevent surgery or for recovery. Since I have played most major sports and coached running, I often analyze movement patterns that contribute to injuries or performance and work with patients in home programs for strengthening, flexibility, and performance. “As a serious recreational tennis and golf addict , I’ve seen Art for many years.  Not only has he greatly helped with knee, shoulder, and back problems with his manual work, he has been really beneficial in analyzing my movement patterns and finding restrictions in other areas such as my feet that contributed to my knee and hip pain.”

My graduate training in Exercise Physiology at U.C. Berkeley gave me a broad scientific understanding of anatomy, physiology, and body fitness, not just for exercise, but for general health.

In thirty- five years of private practice, coupled with ten years specializing in manual therapy in a physical therapy clinic, I have worked with most all physical complaints and have become skillful in an eclectic treatment philosophy that includes posture, flexibility, strength, movement patterns, and cardiac fitness

The “Ten” Series

Of course, as a Rolfer, my skills focus on fascia , muscles, and tendon health along with joint mobilization and strengthening and stretching suggestions. I still love the 10 series to put the whole body in order, but also work with isolated non-series sessions with issues of pain, dysfunction or improvement of flexibility and balance for athletes, musicians, yoga and other disciplines

What to Expect in a Session

Depending upon your needs and ability to process the changes, sessions usually are around 75 minutes with at least an hour of hands-on work; but if more work is needed, I  leave plenty of time for extended length sessions for the same charge.

Because it is common to have you occasionally get off the table for analysis, clients wear loose fitting underclothes or gym attire allowing contact with the skin.  After a beginning chat about how you are feeling with the previous session or any other issues, we often do upright analysis either standing or walking for your feedback and my “vision” of your posture and movement.
